We ate supper at Los Arcoiris one February day.
Ray: We started out with the ubiquitous chips & salsa. The chips were good, and still hot. The salsa was as usual not spicy enough for me, but I added some hot sauce to solve that problem.
Tom: Battery acid is not hot enough for you, in case our readers want a fiducial point for that scale. I enjoyed it fine, thank you.
I also started with a guacamole salad, which was basically shredded lettuce served with a dollop of guac and a slice of plastic simulated tomato. I thought it was incorrect that the plate was actually warm. This is a cold salad, after all.
Ray: For main course, I had the Chile Verde Special La Casa (order of two beef tip burritos with green sauce, without the cheese, $6.00) and a side order of refried beans ($1.30). The burritos were very tasty, with ample chunks of well cooked beef, but I was disappointed in the lack of veggies in the burritos.
My fault, however, as the menu doesn’t mention any! The beans were likewise good, not crusty and dry like some I have had in the past at other restaurants. This fine meal was washed down with a couple of Dos Equis beers ($2.50/ea), which came with the nice touch of a chilled mug.
Tom: I chose the fisherman’s platter–no, wait that wasn’t here. Oh–it was the number 3 combo plate with a chile’ relleno, and one enchilada. I was really looking forward to the relleno since it a sort of standard for comparison.
Ray: And, how did you find your relleno?
Tom: I explored under the shallow puddle of cheese and beans that covered the plate and there it was! Seriously, it wa mighty small–I’d say about one forkfull. I have never seen such a small relleno. Hardly enough to taste to judge it as food.
The (ground) beef taco was average–what can you say about a taco, anyway?
And, the rice was a very odd color–not what I expect in a Mexican or Spanish rice, which should be yellow. It was sort of a pastel orange–not really an appetizing color. Orange is the color of deserts, not rice.
I washed down the experience with a bottle of Bohemia beer.
Ray: The food here is served on nice plates with the standard stamped stainless flatwear. The arrangement of the items is very nicely done.
Tom: Yeah, but I did not enjoy the view of the kitchen–they need to change that somehow. At least the ceiling tiles are not stained… yet!
Ray: The new Los Arcoiris is a very nice place. The decor consists of large Mexican murals and artifacts, with nice, comfortable tables, chairs, and booths. There was light Mexican music playing the night we dined here, which added much to the atmosphere.
The service was very good, fast, and cheerful. Our meals arrived promptly and as-ordered.
Los Arcoiris is without a doubt the best Mexican in town now. The atmosphere is nice (much better than the old location, it is clear lots of work went into the new place), the service is friendly, fast, and efficient, and most of all, the food is very good. I hope to return soon to sample a more authentic set of Mexican dishes.
Tom: It was, as Simon would say on American Idol, “Okay for me.” To say it was the best in town is not saying much. Check our readers’ comments about the other places, on our Discussion Board. I’m going to have to be the East German judge and knock a quarter point off your rating.
Ray: Still, I would recommend Los Arcoiris to anyone looking for good Mexican (or at least what us Gringos call
