Macado’s

We first ate lunch here one day in November. Note that Macado’s is a chain restaurant. Visit them online if you want to see a web site that is almost as lame as this one.

Ray: I had the Firehouse Chili ($4.25), the Big Daddy sandwich ($5.95), and Pepsi to drink ($1.45). The Firehouse Chili appeared to be very slightly diluted Armour canned chili, with a few onions and jalapenos added.

Tom: I know you are picky about your chili–was it up to spec’s?

Ray: I was disappointed. Let me just say that it is disgusting for a restaurant to serve canned chili of any kind, let alone charge $4.25 for it. If, on the other hand, this chili was not canned, then it was a perfect imitation, and thus the same comments apply. The only redeeming feature of the chili were the excellent corn chips served with it.

Tom: But then things turned better as your meal went on?

Ray: Unfortunately, the meal went downhill from there. The Big Daddy (double portion of sliced steak, grilled portabello mushrooms, mayo, onions, lettuce, tomato, and melted swiss and American cheeses on a sub roll, served with chips and 1/4 dill pickle) was literally dripping with grease and totally devoid of any distinctive flavor. I cannot remember a sandwich this bad in my entire life.

Tom: Yes– I had a sandwich that was so unmemorable that I literally cannot remember what it was! And I have the menu right here!

Ray: I wish I could forget mine!

Tom: Well, since you are so hot to flame them, please continue. What about the presentation and atmosphere?

Ray: The food was presented on simple white china, with simple stainless flatware, which suited the casual atmosphere of Macado’s. The service was prompt and cheerful, with only a very short time elapsing between placing our orders and receiving our food. The atmosphere is quite relaxed, with a small bar near the front, tables on two levels (really one and a half levels) in the back, with lots of old photographs and other vintage wreckage on the walls. Classic rock was playing softly in the background, making conversation easy

Tom: So, waddya think overall?

Ray: Despite my negative comments above, I have eaten previously at Macado’s and had excellent sandwiches. I think I just managed to pick some duds this time. The atmosphere is relaxed, the prices reasonable, and the service good and prompt.

Tom: Yeah, I once took an out of town guest to Macado’s but it was only because it was about the only place open at that time of the night. I would not go out of my way to visit.

Ray: I would take friends to this restaurant, but I would steer them toward more traditional selections like Macado’s various Club sandwiches.
