I sampled breakfast at Melanie’s in a solo run.

Tom: I made a solo run at Melanies–Ray is rarely up in time for anything that could be called breakfast.

Ray: Hey! I resemble that remark!

Tom: After not being asked whether I wanted to eat inside or out, I settled down inside. The waitress asked me what I wanted to drink–I said coffee (that would turn out to be a mistake).

Five seconds later another waitress asked me what I wanted to drink.

Duh?

I did then promptly get my coffee, served with a small pitcherlett of cream. It was a disappointment–weak and watery. Why do some places cheap out on making coffee? Read the can or bag “one scoop per 5 or 6 oz. cup.” Less and you get colored water, not worth drinking.

I ordered one of the specials–an omlette with sun dried tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and Swiss cheese.

It was generously large and pretty good but assembled incorrectly. The cheese had been added to the mix and the whole thing cooked, flipped to brown, and then folded. The result is the cheese mostly is what browns. The cheese should be added to the top just before folding, with the heat nicely melting it and not burning or even browning.

Maybe next time…

It was served with a good size bowl of grits, nicely cooked and creamy. A single packet of butter was provided, which turned out to be needed to add to the bread as well.

The bread was a sort of hole-less bagel (?), whole wheat or grain. I asked for the apple butter which I can only imagine was put on in a microscopically thick layer since I really could not taste it (hence using some of the butter packet).

(Hmmm .. my direct view through the kitchen door showed very little light over the stove. Methinks they need more…)

The decor was simple–a few knickknacks and large paintings of faces of women (portraits of Melanies??). The ceiling had the usual sad assortment of loose, ajar and stained/damaged ceiling tiles. Gosh I get tired of seeing those.

There was some kind of generic music playing, barely audible over the roar of a fan that was out of sight down a nearby hall.

The outside seating areas look nice and there is a well maintained decorative garden between the inside and outside seating. The view is your basic street.

The service was Okay, fairly prompt but it took some time to get my payment tray picked up (”Sorry!”). The waitress passed the test though–I paid for a $8.54 meal with a twenty and she brought back a five, five ones and change. Otherwise I might not have change for a tip. Some waitpeople have not figured this out.

She got the tip.
