We ate supper at Mike’s one Friday night in early June.

Ray: I had the Lite Eater’s fried flounder (2 filets, $8.95) with baked potato. The meal comes with all you can eat hush puppies and slaw, but I chose to substitute a salad for my coleslaw for an additional $1.50. As always, the fish here was very good, with no off tastes. Likewise, the potato was cooked correctly… soft, not hard and undercooked. The salad, however, was about 50/50. The lettuce, onions, carrots, and croutons were fresh and very good. However, the tomatoes were the chemically ripened kind, and the French dressing was that gelatinous food-service type of French.

Tom: I had a cup of chowder followed by the “Small” Combination platter (2 items). I chose Calabash Shrimp and Scallops for the combo.

What arrived was an enormous pile of food! Enough that I could only eat half, and took home enough of everything for an entire meal for me the next night. It was all pretty good except the hush puppies were too greasy–just about all the way to the center.

I also found the cole slaw to be pretty good–not runny like you often get when eating out. The chowder was hot and creamy but not particularly generous with the clams.

Ray: I agree–The hush puppies were ok… but a bit too greasy for my taste (although these were hot and freshly cooked, so the grease wasn’t as big a problem as it would have been had these been served cold). I also prefer them a bit less sweet and with pieces of onion in them. I washed all this down with a few glasses of sweet tea which was good, but as usual just a bit too sweet for my taste.

Tom: I cannot imagine the size of the regular size platter. I think they may be priced beyond the point of diminishing returns. The meals are large but pricey. I think they could cut the portions, lower the prices and (if possible) have even more business with everybody happy. Leftovers often do not get eaten but trashed when taken home (I am amazed that I did eat mine), so in many cases it is wasted food as well.

There were only a few other tables occupied while we were there, something not typical of Mike’s–they are usually pretty busy. So we benefited from many others being away at the Watauga High graduation going on while we were there at 8:30. Not sure we can judge the service as typical.

Ray: Yes, our service here was quick, cheerful, and knowledgeable. Our food arrived as ordered just a few minutes after we placed our order.

Tom: I did find the track lighting too bright and glaring–must have been chosen for style more than function. They could lower the wattage by a factor of two, easily.

Ray: The atmosphere here is semi-casual — one would feel comfortable here in jeans, shorts, or a suit. The tables and chairs are simple wood affairs, but comfortable nonetheless. The walls are adorned with navigational charts, coral, fish, and floats, which gives the place that coastal feel. No background music was in evidence on the night we were here. My only distraction was a very large (about 4 x 4 feet!) vent for the air conditioning/heating system that was located right in the center of the dining area. When the air handlers come on, it is distracting to conversation. I’m no HVAC engineer, but this seems like a very unusual and unfortunate design.

Tom: So, I will probably come back, but next time I will order from the Lite side!

Ray: Mike’s is without a doubt the best place for fish in Boone and the surrounding area. They also have a location in Banner Elk. The first time I ate here, I was impressed at the quality of the seafood for a place so far inland. Also, I’ve always had good, fast service here, and the portions are more than enough (if you are a real porker, try the large platter… I’ve never even seen one, since even the medium platter is far more than I can eat).
