Pappy’s BBQ

We ate supper at Pappy’s one November night. Pappy’s continues to be CLOSED for some sort of extended renovation as of April, 2008.

Ray: To start, I had a bowl of the house chili ($3.25). It consisted of hamburger, kidney beans, and very light spices all in a tasty broth. Unfortunately, it contained few veggies and needed more spices.

Tom: I had an order of jalapeno poppers for my appetizer. They were good–with red peppers instead of the usual green, the typical cheese filling and breading.

Ray: For main course, I had the Chopped BBQ Sandwich Plate (BBQ sandwich on Texas toast, with slaw and steak fries, $5.00). There was an ample amount of BBQ in the sandwich, although I found the toast a bit greasy and the BBQ only slightly spiced. A few shots of the house hot sauce spiced the sandwich right up, however! The slaw was ok, nothing special. I was especially sorry Pappy’s didn’t have any vinegar based BBQ sauce or pickles. The fries were large, as steak fries should be, but like the toast, a bit too greasy for my taste. I washed all this down with a glass of sweet tea which was a bit weak ($1.25).

Tom: I chose a chopped pork BBQ platter (not the sandwich), with cole slaw, baked beans, and Texas toast. The cole slaw was a bit runny but tasted fresh, crisp and a bit sweetish. The pork was Okay–tasty but not the leanest I have had. The toast was browned to perfection. The baked beans were nondescript.

Ray: The food here is served in baskets with wax paper and on plain white plates. My chili came in a nice crock. The flatwear is the standard stamped-out Chinese junk. The glasses are the red-plastic Pizza Hut style tumblers. The atmosphere at Pappy’s is basic log cabin, with old signs and license plates on the walls, fans on the ceiling, and faded table cloths on the bench-style booths. I don’t recall any music playing, but if any was, it was unmemorable.

Tom: The popcorn ceiling was as stained as the typical suspended ceilings we see–what is the deal with restaurants and ugly ceilings? The parking lot had a weird layout, with apparent motorcycle spots up front.

Ray: The service here was a bit spotty. Our waitress never offered to refill our tea, tell us about the specials, or ask if we wanted dessert. After quite a wait, another waitress came over and asked if we needed anything else. Checkout was another adventure, since our waitress had split our tabs improperly.

Tom:
Yeah–she disappeared after leaving the checks and never asked us if we wanted dessert. And indeed, one check included the other and they had no easy fix since apparently the ringing up generates an order in the kitchen or something like that! And, how can a place on the way to the ski resorts not accept charge cards?? That’s absurd!

Ray: If I were in a pinch and couldn’t go anywhere else for BBQ, I might return to Pappy’s. The service was spotty, the food not particularly tasty, and the atmosphere wasn’t anything new. Nothing terribly bad, just nothing exceptional.

Tom: I might only sample it again just to give them a second chance.

Ray: I would recommend that anyone wanting good BBQ keep driving and head to Woodlands in Blowing Rock or Bandana’s in Boone. The atmosphere, service, and food are much better at both places.
