We ate lunch at the Trolley Stop one fine fall day.
Ray: I had a couple of different dogs: a Nuclear Hot Dog (melted cheese, mustard, & jalapenos, $1.75) and a North Carolina Hot Dog (chili, mustard, & cole slaw). Both dogs were good. The Nuke, however, wasn’t spicy enough in my estimation to earn its appellation. The NC dog was good, with plenty of toppings and a good slaw, something that is hard to find. I had a Pepsi to drink, which was, well, a Pepsi. The hot dogs here are served in Fenway-park style buns, and the mustard is a Gulden’s brown-type mustard, so if you like Fenway style hot dogs, you’ll love these.
Tom: I had a coupla dawgs, too. I had the American with chili and onions, and a Blue Ridge with mayo and cheese. The first was my favorite standard dog and the second sounded good-and was! My only complaint was not having Coke available. If you are not actually owned by Pepsi then you should have both available. I settled for a Thomas Kemper Root Beer—very nice indeed. I always choose a root beer if Coke is not on the menu, I have the same problem at Back Yard Burgers.
Ray: The food here is served on wax paper in baskets, pretty standard for a hot dog place.
The service here is counter service: place your order at one end and pick it up and pay at the other. However, what service there was was fast and cheerful.
The Trolley Stop is located in an older renovated building in the old downtown part of Boone. They’ve done a nice job: the nice chairs and tables have wrought iron accents, there is 80’s light rock playing in the background, and there are nice nature-theme pictures and art on the walls. It’s a good, quiet place for a quick meal.
I would recommend Trolley Stop to anyone looking for a quick meal at a reasonable price in a relaxing atmosphere.
Tom: Yes–this is nice for a hot dog stand and the food is good. Great even for when you already had lunch and want a “snack.”
Ray: Tom, you really are a porker.
Tom: I have to agree!
