Angelica’s

Angelicas closed in 2008. Tupelo’s is now where they were.

Ray: I started with the sweet tea ($1.50), advertised as “black” sweet tea. I drink several cups of tea per day, and this tea was unlike any black tea I have ever had. In a word, it was undrinkable. I sent it back and ordered a Wolaver’s Pale Ale ($2.75). Wolaver’s is the organic brand of the brews from Otter Creek Brewery in Middlebury, Vermont. I’ve enjoyed Otter Creek beers many times in the past, and this one didn’t disappoint. An excellent pale ale, nicely hopped.

Tom: I had a black Cameroonian tea (at least I think that’s what my notes say!). It was not very hot, maybe due to being poured into a heavy cup that may have not been preheated. And, I had to ask for sugar.

Ray: For main course, I had the Gabriella burrito (red beans, rice, “soysage”, roasted garlic, roasted red peppers, jalapeno yogurt cheese, spring mix, and ruby red salsa, $7.95), minus the spring mix and cheese. This burrito was huge, probably more than a meal for most folks, but not porkers like us! The ingredients complemented each other well, with a nice range of tastes and textures. I especially liked the red beans and the numerous garlic cloves in the burrito. Ummmm, good! The burrito wasn’t very spicy, so I sampled the two homemade house salsas on it. The first, a tomato-based chipolte salsa, was lightly spicy with a bit of a smoky taste.
The second, a habanero papaya salsa, was much more spicy, but not nearly as spicy as one would expect from a habanero-based salsa. I suspect very little habanero was used in this salsa. It also is another example of restaurants using a fruit base for really hot salsas in an effort to
moderate their spiciness. The point of making a hot salsa is to make it HOT, not try to moderate the heat!

Tom: Are you done ranting?

Ray: Er, yeah…

Tom: I had the Smoking Jalapeno Melt which had chipotle cream cheese, grilled tempeh (soy–tastes like cheese), mushrooms, red peppers, avocado and jalapeno jack cheese ($7.50). It was very good, with thick bread (like served with the soup) and plenty of chunks of roasted red peppers and jalapenos. It was tasty and very filling.

I also had a bowl of black eyed pea soup, served with bread. It was good–spicy with bits of celery, onion and 0ne (yes, count it… 1) piece of red pepper. The bread was toasted and buttered.

Ray: The food here is presented on simple but nice pastel plates, with real, patterned flatwear. Yee-ha! Finally another place real flatwear, not the stamped junk most places around here have.

Tom: And another place with stained ceiling tiles. Don’t these owners know they are replaceable?

Ray: Well, it didn’t spoil the atmosphere, which is fairly nice, with plain tables covered with southwest-motif table cloths, simple but comfy chairs, and light jazz playing in the background. There is some eclectic art on the pastel walls, and an area at the front with lots of windows. Angelica’s also purports to be a “juice bar”. While they do serve fresh juices of various kinds, I could not find the “bar”.

Tom: Well, the inspector must have been at some bar, in order to miss the exposed Romex wiring!

Ray: Our food came quickly and without mistakes, but our server was less than cheerful. I suspect she was having a bad day. It was almost as if she suspected who we were and resented us being there… then again, maybe she overheard some of my comments about vegetarianism :) On the downside, I was amazed that restaurant that makes such a big deal out of being socially conscious uses plastic carryout boxes. I believe you had something to say about those boxes too, eh Tom?

Tom: Yeah! This is another place that charges a quarter for a takeout box. This is totally cheap and demeaning!

Ray: Overall, the atmosphere here is relaxing, the food is good and served in ample portions, and despite my comments above, the service was pretty good. Angelica’s seems to be a very good place to go if you are a vegetarian, but I wouldn’t know, since I’m a meat & potatoes kinda guy. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Angelica’s to friends looking for something different.

Tom: I’m a bit closer to the granola end of the spectrum so I give it two spoons up! I’ll be back!
