We most recently ate lunch here one day on a frosty winter day. This restaurant was replaced with Build Your Own Burger and then replaced with Burrito Express.
Ray: I had the Club Supreme with lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, mustard, mayo, salt, pepper, and vinegar ($4.39), Loaded Potato soup, and sweet tea. The soup was very good, with large chunks of potato topped with bacon and cheese in a rich, creamy stock of just the right consistency.
Tom: I had the Philly Cheese Steak on white bread ($3.64), with a side of their Mile High Chili. The sandwich was okay but I did not see any grilled onions in it. Maybe they were in it but I was distracted by the obvious red onions in it. Gosh, I’m no expert on the recipe but I can’t recall ever having it made that way. Maybe they were out of white onions, I dunno, but that would be a poor substitute. A Google search found no such substitutions.
Ray: The sandwich was likewise good, but not anything novel. The tea was ok, but a little sweet for my taste.
Tom: Don’t get me started about their drinks!! I grew up on Coke and to find only a Pepsi machine with their products riled me! I thought I had gotten lemonade but had some help by the restaurant personnel identifying it as Sierra Mist (more like Sierra Missed–what a nasty beverage!). At least they did give me another cup to replace it with something drinkable–the tea. That was a kind offer of service.
Ray: Are you done ranting? Well, the food was presented in typical sub sandwich wrappers, while the soup was served in a styrofoam bowl, all on a tray. Nothing fancy, pretty standard for a sub shop. The atmosphere here is basic, with simple but comfortable tables and chairs. No background music to entertain you, and no art on the walls. Again, pretty standard for a sub shop.
Tom: But, I did not like the ordering procedure. You have to say everything twice since they ask for the details when they make the food and then the cashier asks again for all of it. Kind of annoying.
Ray: Well, I enjoyed my meal here. Mile High Subs serves tasty food in generous portions for a good price. The atmosphere is basic, but for a quick meal, who needs more? Good food and fast, friendly service is all I can ask for in a sub shop, and Mile High Subs certainly delivers on those criteria.
Tom: So,I might come back-we’ll see. And, what’s the deal with “Mile High” anyway? For Boone shouldn’t it be “Kilometer High”?
Ray: Hush.
Second Serving…
Ray: I visited Mile High Subs again, in late June 2004, by myself, to sample the chili. The chili here is pretty good. It consists of meat, kidney & pinto beans, and a few veggies in a broth that is just the right consistency. My biggest complaint about the chili here is that it has no detectable spice whatsoever. In style, the chili at Mile High is very, very close to Wendy’s chili.
