We ate lunch at the Boone Bagelry one day in June, 2004.

Ray: I had a bowl of chili ($2.59) and a Touchdown sandwich ($5.69). The chili, consisting of beans, meat, tomatoes, onions, and spices, was good. It was slightly “hot” spicy, giving a good balance with the other ingredients. The sandwich (turkey breast, ham, swiss, and thousand island normally on rye, but I had mine on wheat toast) was very good. The meats were tasty, and the bread was fresh and toasted just right. The cook seemed to have left the thousand island off my sandwich, but the sandwich was otherwise so good that I didn’t even miss it.

Tom: I figured you are never going to get up early enough for us to do a breakfast review, so I ordered a breakfast anyway! I had the “overstuffed” Bagelicious, a huge bagel with two eggs, bacon, ham, cheese. I chose the Everything Bagel, coated with most known seeds in the plant kingdom. It was excellent, and filling enough to be a lunch.

Well, breakfasts usually aren’t ordered with a lot of sides, but you had some, right?

Ray: Yes. These specialty sandwiches are served with a choice of cole slaw, potato salad, bagel chips, or potato chips as a side (pick one), and a pickle. I chose the potato chips, which were, well, potato chips. I don’t normally like pickles by themselves, but this pickle was crispy and good. I washed everything down with a cup of sweet tea, which was just right. Not too sweet, with the flavor of the tea still recognizable.

Tom: I had tea, too–why did I do that? Well, it was Ok but you know I like mine sweet enough to grow rock candy on a string immersed in it!

Ray: Everything here was served on and in plastic or paper plates and bowls, with plastic utensils. Not a very environmentally friendly choice.

Tom: No tree huggers allowed? Well, the environment was a bit spoiled by smokers, too. Apparently they are sequestered in the room you have to go through when you enter, but their foul stench makes it all the way to the back. Such a shame.

Ray: At least the service was fast and cheerful, with our meal arriving just minutes after we placed our order. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about the items on the menu, something one doesn’t always find.

Tom: Not an outstanding interior, right?

Ray: There is a wall of pictures of customers and a mural of the mountains painted on one wall. The tables and chairs are nothing fancy, but were comfortable and clean. Not bad, considering this very old building started out as a Tastee-Freeze many years ago.

Tom: And, the artifacts on display included shots of local Watauga Rec teams–it is always nice to see a place that supports the local kids.

Ray: The food here was good, served in ample portions, by a quick and friendly staff. It’s a good place to go in Boone for a rough equivalent of a traditional deli.

Tom: I think it will be my new breakfast place when I am too busy to prepare it at home. Their breakfasts are good anytime!
