We ate separately for lunches and suppers at Build Your Own Burger. We didn’t want to be seen with each other! Not really, just different schedules.

Ray: I visited BYOB twice, once for supper and the following day for lunch.
For supper, I had the 1/2 lb burger on onion roll with leaf lettuce, tomato, onions, banana peppers, mustard, mayo, and buffalo sauce. The burger was very tasty! The toppings were fresh, with crispy lettuce and tasty onions, but the tomatoes were only ok. For lunch the following day, I tried the chili, house salad and onion rings.
Tom: I have only had lunch there, so far. I chose the 1/4-lb burger on an onion roll, and onion rings, having been advised by a friend that the “fries were greasy.” I’ll have to wait until I have the nerve to try those. He did advise that I get the cole slaw, so I will have to try that later. I chose to have shredded lettuce, tomato, red peppers, onion and mustard/mayo/ketchup. My choice of onion rings made it not ring up as a combo, but was 20 cents more. In fact, I think the ordering system is needlessly confusing–a lot of options. Sometimes having it ‘your way’ may not always be best.
I agree that the tomatoes were plastic, remniscent of supermarket “tomatoes.” The rest of theingredients were fresh and good.
How was the chili?
Ray: It consists of pintos, meat, peppers, onions, tomato and good spices. It’s one of the few chilis in town with a bit of heat to it. Unfortunately, bread boules are no longer available for the chili, due to lack of demand. This is a shame, since this is some good chili!
Tom: I liked the onion rings–maybe the best in Boone! And, the burgers are juicy enough to require extra napkins.
Ray: Yes, the onion rings were quite good. Well battered rings of real onion, fried crispy without being greasy.
The house salad was just ok, with mealy tomatoes pretty much ruining it for me. On the plus side, the balsamic vinegar dressing was good, and for the price, the portion size for the salad was more than ample. I washed both meals down with iced tea. This tea was good. Not overly sweet, and strong enough so that the taste of the tea itself came through.
Tom: I had a soft drink–the drinks are refillable and self-serve. How did you find the decor?
Ray: I looked around and there it was! The atmosphere here is basic, with simple tables, booths, and chairs.
There are a few ASU and local themed prints on the walls, and light rock playing in the background. Free Wi-Fi is provided. The high wood wainscotting around the walls is a nice touch, but the floors were a bit rough. There are a few round metal and picnic tables outside for the warmer months.
Tom: Yeah, it looks like it may be mostly leftovers from the days when this was occupied by Mile High Subs.
Ray: The food was served in typical burger shop fashion: in baskets and styrofoam plates and cups with plastic utensils. Not elegant, but exactly what one expects at a burger joint.
The service was fast and cheerful, with no problems at all.
Tom: I like this place as a good alternative to McBurger type places, although I think Back Yard Burger is in the same league as BYOB.
Ray: I enjoyed my meals here. The choice of toppings is quite overwhelming!
One could probably eat here for months and never have the same combination of toppings on a burger twice. To top it all off, the chili is some of the best in town.
Tom: Yes, again, there may be too many choices for some of us.
Ray: I wouldn’t hesitate to take friends to BYOB if we were in the mood for a quick burger or some good chili. The atmosphere is relaxing and the presence of free Wi-Fi is a definite plus. Think of this as the Trolley Stop of hamburgers.
