Capone’s

We first ate lunch at Capone’s one day in spring, and then ate again on the day of the Beast, 6/6/6 (the Devil made us do it…).

Ray: On the latest visit I started off with the side salad with Italian dressing. The salad was good, with much fresher lettuce and tomato than when we last ate here. The dressing was also very good, with just the right amount of spices.

Tom: Me, too, and well, the thin slice of inch-and-a-half diameter tomato was plastic to me. I’ve forgotten what it was like on our first visit. Hey! You can get good local tomatoes in June! I get them at Gene’s down in Vilas. Also, they delivered your salad with cheese even though you asked for no cheese on it.

Ray: On our first visit we tried to get a split Greek /Tandoori specialty pizza, but Capone’s was out of Tandoori chicken that day. We then switched that side to an American specialty, only to be told that they were also out of steak. We settled for a medium Greek/BBQ ($13.99).

Tom: Yeah, and on our recent visit we were told we could not order a split specialty pizza at all! However, we were allowed to order a specialty pizza in the small size although it was not on the menu. Go figure!

Ray: I don’t think I have ever had chicken on a pizza, and I know I have never had BBQ on a pizza. Surprise, both were
very good, with a great balance of flavors. In addition to chicken, the Greek side had feta, black olives, peppers, and onions. The BBQ special consists of pulled beef bbq, onions, and peppers. These were both very tasty, with a good New York style crust (Chicago deep dish is also an option), a nice change from my typical pepperoni/onion pizza. I washed
all this good food down with a Pepsi which was, well, a Pepsi.

Tom: Yes, and I tried to order a Coke but got the old Saturday Night Live line, “no Coke, Pepsi.” It’s not the same and there is no excuse for an independent restaurant to only offer one and not the other.

But I will agree that the pizzas were all good, on all visits. The ingredients were fresh and done just right.

Ray: I came back a few days later without you, and successfully ordered a Tandoori specialty pizza. It was quite good, with spiced tandoori chicken (which was, however, not spicy enough for me… I had to ask for Texas Pete), onions, peppers, and tomatoes. On this occasion I had a few pints of Boddington’s Pub Ale, which was quite good with a nice creamy head.

Tom: You order a chaser of Texas Pete with everything!

My pizza on our recent visit was the Greek, and was very good. I had it with the white (cheese) base instead of the red, and it was excellent. It reminded me of the famous white pie at Solleceitos’s, now long closed. The artichokes really gave it some sharp zip.

And how did you find the presentation?

Ray: I looked down at the table and there it was! The food here is served on pizza pans, with frilly flatwear and standard off-white plates. My plate was, however, freshly wet from the dishwasher.

The decor at Capone’s consists of white walls with some framed beer ads, faux brick, and nice comfortable booths. There was a radio playing old rock in the background. When both of us were there, we noticed that the oven seemed a bit loud, but I didn’t notice it when I returned, even though I was sitting closer to it. Capone’s was a relaxing place to eat. Finally, continuing a trend set by Boone Saloon, Capone’s is smoke-free until 9 PM.

Tom: Yeah, I wish that it all others were smoke-free all the time.

Ray: The service here was fast and cheerful, despite our complaints about the Tandoori chicken and then steak not being available. My only complaint is that the wait staff should know before they come to the table what ingredients are available. Being out of something is ok, but it’s annoying to have your order taken (twice!) and then only later find that it cannot be filled.

Tom: Yes–service worth tipping!

Ray: I’ve been waiting for another “authentic” pizzeria to open in Boone, and now it’s here (with the impending opening of Flipside beside Klondike, we will have two!). This pizza is much closer to pizza from the Northeast, and much better in my opinion that that from the big chains. The service both times I’ve been here has been great, the food is tasty, and the environment relaxing. Can’t ask for much more than that. Capone’s has just opened, and I think the small problems we noted above will get worked out with time.

Tom: We will compare the new Italian place that just replaced Coffey’s–it may be up in the same league. It certainly is a nice place to get a pizza in Old Downtown, convenient to tourists as well as students. We will be back again!.
